Why do people call both places a pachinko parlor?
A venue can offer both pachinko and pachislot, so its overall name may say “pachinko” even when a whole floor contains slot machines. Inside, follow the SLOT or スロット signs to find the reels. A store name on a map is not enough to identify the machines at a particular seat.
“Japanese slot machine” is a useful English description of pachislot. “Pachislo” is another spelling you may encounter, especially in discussions of imported cabinets. When using this site, search the machine name as well as the game type: two cabinets based on the same anime may have very different instructions.
What do you actually do on each machine?
On pachinko, you operate a handle to launch balls into the board. On pachislot, the usual sequence is to place the required bet, start the reels with the lever and press each reel’s stop button. The cabinet’s instructions take priority over a general description.
Stopping pachislot reels is part of the game, but it does not let you choose any prize simply by aiming at a symbol. Correct timing and stop order can matter for collecting an available result. Internal game conditions still determine which outcomes are available.

Are all pachislot machines the same?
No. A-Type commonly describes bonus-focused machines. AT and ART describe systems that use assistance during particular game states. The exact bonus structure, transitions and stopping instructions vary by model.
Smart Pachislot (スマスロ, often called “sumaslo”) uses electronically managed medals rather than loose medals. The absence of a medal tray does not turn it into pachinko. It also does not mean every Smart Pachislot machine has the same game rules.

Which information should you check for a first visit?
- Identify the game: board and launch handle, or reels and stop buttons?
- Read the posted lending rate: a cheaper rate means less money per playing unit, not a promise of winning.
- Find the exact model: include a version number or subtitle if shown.
- Check ordinary-play instructions: do this before inserting banknotes.
- Decide your limit: choose how much time and money you will spend before starting.
